We have an exciting opportunity for Senior Media Adviser to join our team in Manchester.
The Senior Media Advisor is responsible for leading and executing the firm’s media relations strategy. This includes managing all aspects of media engagement, proactive and reactive, to protect and enhance the firm’s reputation, support strategic priorities, and position our lawyers and practice areas as thought leaders.
The role requires a blend of strategic thinking, editorial judgment, stakeholder management, and hands-on delivery. You are the firm’s media expert and advisor, responsible for ensuring our media presence is accurate, timely, impactful, and aligned with legal sensitivities and business goals.
Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Media Leadership
Develop and maintain a firm-wide media strategy aligned with business objectives, reputational priorities, and marketing campaigns.
Create annual and quarterly media plans with clear goals, target outlets, key messages, and stakeholder alignment.
Advise on media positioning, reputational risks, and opportunities.
2. Proactive Media Engagement
Identify and pitch stories to national, regional, legal, and sector-specific media.
Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and producers.
Develop media angles from legal developments, client wins, thought leadership, and firm initiatives.
Coordinate interviews, media briefings, roundtables and any other initiative as required.
Draft and edit press releases, thought leadership, comment pieces, and media kits.
3. Reactive Media Handling
Manage incoming media enquiries, ensuring timely, accurate, and legally sound responses.
Draft reactive statements, Q&As, and holding lines.
Liaise with legal teams to ensure messaging is compliant and risk-managed.
Escalate reputational risks and coordinate internal approvals.
4. Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
Work closely with lawyers, and practice area leads to understand priorities and sensitivities.
Provide media training and coaching to spokespeople.
Manage the strategic relationship with Markettiers and any other PR partners.
Demonstrate the S+G way in all you do and all interactions you have.
6. Content Development & Channel Integration
Ensure media content is repurposed for owned channels (website, social media).
Collaborate with digital and content teams to amplify media coverage.
Support integrated campaigns that span earned, owned, and paid media.
Maintain a media content calendar aligned with firm priorities.
7. Monitoring, Reporting & Evaluation
Track journalist engagement and maintain a CRM of media contacts.
8. Governance & Process Management
Maintain media protocols, approval workflows, and messaging templates.
Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and client confidentiality requirements.
Manage embargoes, exclusives, and media agreements.
Keep internal stakeholders informed of media activity and risks.
9. Sector & Practice Area Support
Develop tailored media strategies for priority sectors and practice areas.
Support lawyers with media engagement, including ghost-writing and briefing.
Monitor legal and industry developments to identify media opportunities.
10. Thought Leadership & Profile Building
Position the firm’s experts in commentary on legal, regulatory, and societal issues.
Identify awards, rankings, and media features to raise profile.
Manage the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners activity alongside the Head of Marketing and Communications.
Support leadership visibility through media interviews and authored content.
